Barkestone Bridge Closure (LCC Ref: ST0975)

Leicestershire County Council are planning to close Barkestone Bridge which is located on an unnamed track over the disused Grantham Canal.

The bridge has a current weight restriction of 18T GVW. It is little used and the arch itself remains fit-for-purpose. However, the condition of the southern wing walls has deteriorated over time to a point where they are now beyond economical repair. The route does not warrant significant investment, given its rural location and limited usage. Therefore, the road shall be closed to vehicular traffic under an experimental Traffic Regulation Order, but will remain open for non-motorised users, i.e. pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians. The initial closure will be in place for 18 months under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) with the expectation that the Order will become permanent.

The closure will be at the bridge location only. Access up to the bridge in both directions will be maintained.
